If you were with us for our Membership Meeting and Holiday Party, you know that we set for ourselves an ambitious goal for growth in 2012. Two hundred and seventy-five new members – a significant step up from the 250 we added in 2011. Ambitious – but achievable in the context of working throughout 2012 for candidates and campaigns that will make a difference.
As you read each new issue of The Retiree Advocate, make a mental note of the articles your friends and political associates will find stimulating. Then stick the newsletter in your purse or pocket. Keep it with you all month long!
Use The Retiree Advocate as a conversation opener – then invite your new friend to join PSARA, the activist, leading-edge organization for retirees – and for all who hope to retire.

‘We’ll see that day come ‘round!’
There’s an old song that speaks a basic truth about organizing. “One man’s hands,” the song tells us, “can’t tear a prison down.” Nor can two men’s hands.
But listen to the old song’s ringing affirmation: “But if two and two and fifty make a million, we’ll see that day come round!”
In our monthly page 2 column we’ve emphasized again and again the importance of each and every new member we can sign up. And our members are responding. Our membership is now growing at an impressive 250 a year.
Yes, indeed, “two and two” are figuratively beginning to “make fifty.”
In the process, as the song tells us, we’re building a solid base for more explosive growth in the future.
Well, maybe not a million, but for sure in time we can enroll new members in the thousands. Those thousands are out there, and they need our action-oriented, sharp-edged politics.
We simply have to find them, one by one and two by two, and introduce them to The Retiree Advocate and invite them to join us. Every new member has a circle of family and friends in his or her community. That makes every new member a potential organizer. Drop the pebble in the pool, and the circles widen!
And this is how we multiply our strength. This is how “two and two and fifty make a million.” And this is how “we’ll see that day come ‘round!”

Building power
Our banner and members have taken to the streets at one demonstration after another, for labor rights, for taxing the rich, for social justice. No two ways about it. People respect PSARA!
Our bold activities have everything to do with our membership growth. Good people support organizations that get into the action. “Older and Bolder” is more than just a slogan for us.
We’re going to continue to grow. The times demand it, and we’re responding. We’re shooting for 250 new members in calendar 2011. Our mission is to work with others to build a stable, ongoing movement strong enough to challenge the corporate powers that today dominate the economics and politics of our country. Adding 250 new members this year brings us an important stride closer to establishing that mighty movement.
That new member you’re going to sign up is an indispensable contribution toward political power.
Millions are in motion, here and across the country. Across the world, for that matter! The times are ripe for growth. We don’t have to do it all. Just our share

One leg at a time
If you ever go to a meeting, make a pitch for membership in the Puget Sound Alliance, and sign up fifteen new members, good for you.
You’re the champion.
Most of us pull our pants on one leg at a time.
If you belong to the latter group, read on.
This appeal is to you.
One new member is an accomplishment to be proud of, because it’s true – every new member makes us stronger.
And every one of our more than one thousand members can get that one new member.
Every one of us. Without exception.
So what are you waiting for?

And go get ‘em.

Seven great reasons to sign up Jane or Joe
1. Jane or Joe will get twelve lively issues of The Retiree Advocate, making them much smarter than friends or family.
2. Think of Joe or Jane as the nucleus for further membership growth. The old “pebble in the pool” principle applies here.
3. You will be building PSARA’s muscle for the titanic political battles that lie ahead. More members equals more clout.

Target for 2010: 250 new members!
With your help we enrolled 170 new members in 2009 -- 20 more than our goal. Now the PSARA Executive Board has set the ambitious target of 250 new members in 2010. We’re counting on you to pitch in to help us reach that goal.
PSARA is an outstanding voice for progressive seniors and their allies in the Puget Sound region, in the state – yes, and because of our affiliation with the national Alliance for Retired Americans, in the halls of Congress as well.
For example, we’re planning (subject to Executive Board approval) to propose four resolutions for endorsement at the upcoming conventions of the Washington State Labor Council and the national ARA. One calls on Congress to eliminate the $106,800 cap on taxable income in funding Social Security; a second strongly opposes the proposed “entitlement commission”; a third calls for the elimination of the anti-democratic 60-vote rule in the Senate, and a fourth supports the proposed federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
When we speak for an organization of more than one thousand voluntary dues payers – as we will when we add 250 more members – we earn the respect of our elected representatives.
A growing organization is a vibrant, vigorous actor in the political arena. Invite your families, neighbors and friends to join. Carry The Retiree Advocate with you. Give the gift of news, comment and analysis that comes to your mailbox 12 times a year!
