Membership Meeting…and Holiday Party!

Thursday, Dec. 15th, 12:30 p.m., at UFCW 21,
5030 First Avenue South,
we will feast, enjoy each others’ company, and do the necessary business of PSARA!

Bring a small (or big) bag of food to donate to the King County Labor Agency Food Bank. Bring your own favorite dish or drink to share at our potluck.

Come to listen to and question Congressman Jay Inslee (provided Congress is not in session) as he returns from the 2011 Congress and makes his case as to why he should be the next Governor of Washington. Hear a report on the 2011 Special Session and PSARA’s proposed legislative agenda for the 2012 Legislative session. Let us know if you approve.

Learn about a new resolution supporting the Caring Across Generations campaign we will be asking the Seattle City Council to pass.

Help us elect our President and Administrative Vice President for the next two years. Also hear about the proposal to expand our Executive Board and elect new and/or returning members to the Executive Board.

The Executive Board has proposed some By – Law changes necessary for our IRS application for 501c4 status. We will need the approval of our members for these changes to the By – Laws.

Please join us on December 15th. Help us build PSARA as we celebrate and prepare ourselves for the work that lies ahead.

Membership meeting, Holiday Party, Dec. 16

PSARA will hold its annual election of officers and Executive Board members at the Membership Meeting and Holiday Party on Thursday, December 16. Members who wish to run should contact Election Committee members Will Parry or Maureen Bo at (206) 448-9646.

The terms of President Robby Stern and Executive Vice President Maureen Bo have another year to run. Community Vice President Bette Reed and Treasurer Edie Koch, whose terms are ending, have indicated they are candidates for re-election.

The Executive Board meets on the third Thursday of each month. Members are elected to two-year terms. Half the board members’ terms expire in even-numbered years, half in odd-numbered years. All board members whose terms are expiring have indicated they are candidates to remain on the board.

In addition to regular attendance at monthly membership meetings, Executive Board members are asked to work on committees, contact elected officials, testify at hearings, or participate in demonstrations, rallies, phone banks and conferences.

Membership Meeting:

Work, fun and a spectacular view

Stimulating speakers. Informative reports on the campaigns for the good and bad ballot measures. Gearing up our Alliance for the coming battle to defend Social Security on the eve of its 75th Anniversary.

All that and a potluck lunch – deliciousness guaranteed – will enliven the Puget Sound Alliance for Retired Americans Summer Membership Meeting Thursday, July 22. Lunch is served at 12:30 and the meeting will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Central Area Senior Center, 500 30th Avenue S. in Seattle.

Jonathan Seib, the governor’s lead person on the new health care reform law, will discuss plans to implement the law in our state.

Representative Hans Dunshee (D,44) will report on Referendum 52, referred to the voters by the legislature. The referendum would extend the sales tax on bottled water and would permit the sale of bonds, with the proceeds dedicated to the sorely-needed upgrading and retrofitting of our public schools and colleges, creating 30,000 to 40,000 jobs in the process.

Owen Linch, senior labor representative to the Workers’ Compensation Advisory Committee, will explain why I-1082, privatizing workers’ compensation, is a bad idea.

The agenda will also include updates on the fight for Comprehensive Immigration Reform and on our campaign for a city ordinance requiring employers to provide sick leave to all workers employed in Seattle. The Executive Board will make recommendations on the measures that appear headed for the ballot. Membership discussion and action will follow.

Serious business, sure – but membership meetings are fun as well. We practically guarantee a warm sunny day, with spectacular views of Lake Washington, Mount Rainier and the Cascades, in the company of some of our community’s very best people.
